“I am…I am so sorry, my darling… You shouldn’t have had to see—”(我……
“You still could have found work in London! Why didn’t you do something—anything!
“My…my darling, I…I wanted to! I did! I really did! 但——) 她咽了一下,仿佛这些话是从她破碎的灵魂中挤出来的,“—But it wasn’t that simple. I was… so afraid. Of failing. Of… everyone.
“I couldn’t read, Tom. Not a single word. My magic was weak, barely enough to mend a torn dress or start a fire. But those weren’t the worst things. No, the worst was… him.”(我不识字,汤姆,一个词都拼不出来。
You mean…my…father?”(他?
I really did. Or… I thought I did. When I first saw him, he was everything I’d ever dreamed of. Handsome, confident… Free. He was…like a ray of sunlight, so distinct from the dark, suffocating world I grew up in. But… he didn’t love me. And of course he didn’t love me…”(我爱过他,汤姆。
I used it. I told myself it was the only way. That I would never see him otherwise…and he would never understand that I could make him happy. That I could mend clothes and make porridge and clean the house and be a good wife. I just needed to give him a little push…for him to see whom I really was.(没错,我用了迷情剂。
“But deep down, I knew it was wrong. I knew it was cruel. I took his will, his freedom. I turned him into something he wasn’t. And when I finally stopped… he left.
I was a monster who got what she deserved. How could I be worthy of anything after that? How could I be a good mother to you, when I wasn’t even a good person?”(那是我的报应,汤姆。
汤姆剑眉紧锁,拳慢慢握紧,声音低沉而冷硬:“You think that excuses what you did? You think that makes it right to abandon me?”(你以为这就能为你所做的一切开脱吗?
I don’t deserve to be excused! What I said…it…it doesn’t excuse anything! I was weak. I was…evil. And when I looked at you, I was afraid. I thought, What if you turned out like me? What if I ruined you, too? What if you hated me for what I’d done? Maybe you’d be better off without me. Maybe… if I took myself to the grave, you’d have a chance to be better, to be stronger than I ever was.”(不!
汤姆的声音沉得比刚才更低:“You thought leaving me alone in an orphanage would make me stronger? You thought that was love? Do you know the kind of life I had there?”(你以为把我留在孤儿院能让我更好、更坚强?!
It wasn’t love. It was fear. It was guilt. I was so consumed by what I’d done, by what I was, that I couldn’t see anything else. Not even you. And I will carry that regret with me for the rest of my existence.”(不,不,汤姆!
汤姆被看得有点儿不自在,罕见地红了脸, “It’s not as glorious as you think, mom. I got into lots of trouble on the way.”(并没你想象的那么了不起,妈妈。 梅洛普流着泪轻轻抚摸他的脸颊, “But you got yourself out of all of them! I’m so proud of you, my darling.”(可你最终克服了所有难关!
他于是坦然接受了她对他膜拜般的目光,露出个自豪的笑, “Perhaps I can show you one day, mom.”(或许有一天我能带你去瞧瞧,妈妈。)
“I’m sorry you had to find out the truth yourself, my darling.”(我很抱歉你得亲自去寻找真相,我的宝贝。)
“I want nothing to do with those people ever again. But they should pay for what they did, to you.”
梅洛普伸出手,轻轻摩挲她儿子的手,柔声道: “I don’t want you to hate your father, my darling. I was more at fault than he.”(我不想要你恨你父亲,我的宝贝。
“Don’t let hatred corrode the purity of your heart, my dearest. Blame his share of the burden on me. But I hope you could forgive him, darling, the way you forgave me.”(别让仇恨腐蚀了你心中的纯净,我最亲爱的。
“No, mother. Not him. Them.”(不,母亲。
“No! My child!” 她握住他的手,泪水再一次夺眶而出,语气近乎哀求:“You have an entire life ahead of you! Don’t let them ruin your life! I am not worth the risk! If you attack wizards, you could…you could end up in…in Azkaban! Besides, my father… He starved himself to death. He’s already got what he deserves. Promise me you won’t do anything rash on my behalf.”
“You, sir, of all people, should know what this is.”(你,先生,最该知道这是什么。)
Did you…?”(博金-博克……
“Of course not, sir! How could you entertain such a thought!”
说那两句的时候,小姑娘本来装出一副好学生被老师怀疑后被严重冒犯的模样,最后却又忍俊不禁地笑了, “Borgin and Burkes sent a clerk to escort this to Hepzibah Smith, some collector of magical antiquities in London. But he never got there, of course. I stopped him—well, strictly speaking, your darling uncle stopped him.”(博金-博克卖给了赫普兹巴·史密斯,一个爱收藏古物的老太太。
Morfin Gaunt?”
“Yeah.” 爱茉尔眨了眨眼,眸波灵动俏媚,语气调皮可爱, “I…uh…used a bit of an…unforgivable curse…”(我……
“You controlled Morfin Gaunt?”(你控制了莫芬?)
He’ll be OK, though, nothing more than a bit of a scare. But Morfin is less lucky. I waited until the Ministry got there and got his confession on record.
And Happy New Year”(生日快乐,汤姆。
他上前一步,一把抱住她,把头埋进她的发间深深嗅着她的清香,轻声道: “Promise me you will never do such a dangerous thing, whether for me or someone else, ever again.”(向我保证,无论是为了我还是为了什么其他人,永远都不许再做这么危险的事了。)
她抬手环住他的脖颈,“Then promise me that you, too, will tell me everything that is going on in that brilliant mind of yours.”
“I do have something to tell you… Or rather, someone to introduce to you. But as a student who just learned a lesson on appreciating people whom one holds dear, I should first thank you for this mighty gift…”(我的确有件事要告诉你……
